Once an interviewer asked me “ What is the role of on page SEO? Does it play a major role in ranking?

My answer was, “Yes on-page is required for ranking, But it does not play as much role as off page.

It is compulsory as it enhances the beauty of page and readers engagement. I think its role is 30% and off-page 70%”.

This was the case before 10 years. I got selected in the company, but If you are gonna answer this question as I did, today you will not be selected. Today scenario is completely changed.

I am gonna share my personal experience on top on page SEO secrets you haven’t heard before. During 2005-07 I was working in an SEO farm. Social media were new to the market and users were very little.

Plagiarism contents were in demand those days. I used to write my own content without copying others.

But some other sites used to copy my content and they were ranking higher than my sites I was working for. I did a lot of hard work to create a unique content and my competitors were copying my content without even mentioning the author’s name and they were outranking. What might be the reason behind that?

The answer is backlinks. They used to generate thousands of backlinks using software tools within seconds. The more backlinks a site had it was the winner. That’s why off-page was winning over on-page.

The on-page condition was worse enough. Thin contents including 200-300 words and thick keyword density were the winner.

Google had n’t developed any algorithm to catch the plagiarism or spamming. Seo professionals could easily cheat google.

I was also in the practice of using automated software to generate backlinks. But today copying others content is completely banned. And it should be.

You work hard on a topic and your research is stolen by others, how do you feel? Thanks to Google algorithms that save the earning of many content writers.

Today google is smart enough. If you do any spamming or use duplicate contents your website may be completely banned.

On-page optimization plays a crucial role in ranking your website. But most blog owners neglect this part and only focus on off-page. Most consider off page acquires 70% for ranking a website.

But it is not true. In some cases, it works like for home page of a company website which is comprised of the basic information about the company with good images videos and subscription form. But you should give on-page 50% priority to optimize your blog.

There are still many internal factors of Google, which are not revealed to the SEO professionals. You may get sometimes dilemma, which factor to follow and which not. So better don’t leave anything you know about the rules.

On-page optimization comprises many factors like title optimization, URL optimization, image, footer optimization etc. Previously keyword density and meta keywords were a major factor in ranking purpose.

But due to its misuse by black hat experts, google has stopped giving priority. But keyword density is today necessary in some amount.

Think there are two shops both selling cards and stationary items. One shop has a beautiful interior design with well-behaved staffs and customer support and the other is scratchy old fashioned design with unfriendly staff behavior. Which will be in profit?

Obviously the first one. Visitors want the best things in the market. If you provide them the best things with friendly behavior you will sustain in the market.

To convert  a visitor into a customer is not a child’s play. You have to convince him with your good quality knowledge about the product and information.

Then you can catch his psychology. The good quality information adhered with attracting and engaging multimedia may turn him into customer and he will buy your products.

The same case happens in on-page also. If you have a good on-page score then visitors will be definitely converted.

Quality Content:

Using the content you can attract the visitors to share the information you need. Good quality content really enhances SEO score.

There are millions of contents uploaded daily worldwide. So why do people read your content, why your content is special, you have to analyze that and according to that create your content.

Users need informative content as content is shared. Good quality content not only pulls a lot of visitors but also increases users’ retention.

Before writing content you have to research the keyword you are going to target for. Then create the content according to the keyword including the keyword in the content which is called the keyword density.

  • Content should consist of a clear headline, precise space between sentences, images, videos and infographics.
  • Write minimum 300 words content.
  • Contents including words more than 2000 rank higher soon. 
  • Try to keep your content length between 800-1800 words to get the best result.

Because very lengthy contents sometimes frustrate readers and they leave without reading the whole post.

Page Title:

The title should be unique for each page or post. As search engines know about your content from the title.

  • The title should clearly describe your post and include the main keyword.
  • The search bots first identify the title and then they scan the other elements.
  • A title should closely match with the content as search engine find the relation between keyword and content.
  • The title should be limited to 74 characters.
  • You can write title including hyphen or pipe symbol also.
  •  Include the title in <title>….</title> tag in html.

  • Write the title in H1 tag so that crawlers can be able to identify the post properly.
  • Add power words like Best, top, review, tutorial , guide etc. to the title.

Url Structure:

Url or Uniform resource locator is the address of your web-page. If you don’t mention the correct address of your house how can a postman deliver your letter or parcel?

Similarly using the URL structure the crawlers finds your page and read the content, image, files and index it accordingly. Always use unique URL for each page including the keyword you are targeting the page.

These are the dynamic URLs which are used by e-commerce sites.

 Heading Tags:

Use heading tag using H1, H2, H3. The title tag is taken as H1 tag so you don’t need to repeat it.

Don’t take more than 1 H1 tag and don’t repeat H2, H3 tags so many times. Subheadings should be used using H2 or H3 tags.

Keyword Density:

Keyword density (no. of occurrence of a keyword in a post) should be minimum 0.5% and not more than 1.5%. Main keyword or Focus keyword should be used in the first and last paragraph.

And it should be used inside the post 2-3 times. You should highlight your important keywords using bold, italic, underline.

Meta description:

Meta description gives the summary of your blog post. So it should be unique including the main keyword.

The length of the meta description should not exceed 160 characters. Google does not give any priority to meta keywords.

Image optimization:

An image is used to attract and engage the readers. But search engines don’t recognize the images.

The only way to let the search engines know about the image is to add the alt text. The alt text should contain the targeted keyword. You can use SEO friendly image plugin that will add the alt text automatically in WordPress.

Compress the image size using save for web option in photoshop or WP Smush, EWWW image optimizer WordPress plugin. An image of large size will increase the loading time of a website.

Image size should be compressed so that it won’t decrease the loading speed of the website as loading speed is one of the ranking factors of search engine ranking.

Do good Linking:

Internal linking and outbound linking are useful techniques to crawl your site fast. Outbound links to related posts help search engine to identify your research on the post you have published.

Similarly, internal links to different posts using anchor text can easily help your site to crawl faster and rank on search engine.

Use at least 3-4 internal and outbound links in a 1000 words post.

Good Site speed:

Check that your site shouldn’t be loaded in more than 3 seconds. That’s why always choose a good hosting plan. If you are choosing a starter plan or economic plan then increase the resource level or use a VPS hosting.

Always compress the size of multimedia, pictures, infographics you are uploading to your website. Check your site speed at  pingdom, google insight, GT Metrix.

Good Social Sharing:

Good social Sharing is one of the ranking factors of SEO. There are many websites which solely depend on social media to get a huge volume of traffic.

So must include social sharing buttons or plugins in each post. If your post gets more social sharing, then readers’ trust increases and  they stick to it.

There are many free WordPress plugins available like, Digg Digg, Sumome, Shareaholic etc. Search Engine bots also give priority to the most shared posts.

Summary:

On page is the major part of SEO. If you implement a good on-page strategy then you can easily rank on SERP. If you are a beginner then do your on-page optimization in wordpress using Yoast SEO plugin which will detect your errors and guide you as following:
